  • 1.  Collecting work samples for Independent Study

    Posted 02-15-2023 09:56 AM

Hello everyone - We are a school here in California and as a requirement for Independent Study, we need to have on file a work sample for every student.  Curious to hear from other schools on how you do this for Edgenuity courses? What is the quickest, most efficient way to do this that satisfies the requirement?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi Karen! Are you looking for advice on how to do this logistically, or for which pieces of student work are best to use for work samples?

Good morning Mary Lou - Either! Any advice in this area would be appreciated. Is there a way to do anything like this in bulk?

I use student notes that we require and they are labeled by unit. I print the exam at the end of the course when they complete it.

    Hi Karen,

If you are using Instructional Services teachers, this can be a bit of a task.  I usually look at the courses the students are enrolled in to determine which course would provide the best writing sample. For example, English is my go-to course for writing samples because there are multiple opportunities in this course for students to submit written work. If the student is not enrolled in English, then I look at the scope and sequence to determine which other course requires written work. Courses like History, Psychology, Creative writing, and Journalism all have required written work that can probably be used depending on your requirements.  I would let students know that their written work samples will be collected, this bit of information can make a real difference in the quality of work submitted.

I know of no way to do this in bulk. I usually complete this task manually, which can take a bit of time so I recommend that you begin early in the semester to gather the writing samples.

If you are using your own teachers then your teachers then they can accomplish this task, the same as they would do in the traditional school setting.

I just had to produce work samples for an audit. I realized I should have been downloading and printing some regularly, as I had to reopen last semester's classes to find writing samples since my students haven't done as many bigger projects at this point in the semester.

I used an essay from ELA, a lab report from science, a performance task for math, and a written project from history. It sounds like you only need one, so I would say ELA or history are probably best. I'm a teacher, so I just go through the student's course, find the assignment, and then print a screenshot or download the student's work depending on what style of assignment it is on Edgenuity (sometime they write into a box and other times they have to upload something--if they upload, I can download, but otherwise I had to do the screenshot). I am not sure what kind of access you have, but you could have the teachers do this.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have questions.
