Is anyone else as obsessed about Chatgpt as I am?  I know Edgenuity is looking at ways to fight back against it. I have a different philosophy, let's embrace it, and guide students in using it in positive ways.  I see tons of ways that we can use it to support online students.

    Happy Friday!

I agree that it is a cool tool to play around with. Back when I was in the English classroom, "blank page syndrome" was a huge thing with students struggling to get a first draft done, and I could totally see AI being a great jumping off point for kids to get their juices running. Also, I imagine there are ways that it could really help teachers creating writing samples for students.

I also have a friend who asked ChatGPT to write them a lesson plan on a specific topic, and it was pretty on point! So I definitely think there is potential for some huge timesavers once you start getting into it.

@Marcelle McGhee have you talked about it with any of your virtual students? What are their thoughts on it, and how do you think you could guide them to the positive ways of using it?

I teach an online College and Career Essentials course where students have to create a resume. I gave ChatGBT a prompt of "write a resume for a HS student with lifeguarding experience and volunteer experience at a summer kids camp" and it created a nice starting point for a resume. It had brackets with [put name here] and [name of swim club here] etc. The best part was a bulleted list of skills below each experience that students could tweak to fit their actual experience.

My thinking is...in the "real world", no one is rewarded for re-inventing the wheel. My favorite quote about ChatGBT is "Will it replace lawyers? No, but lawyers who use ChatGBT will replace lawyers who don't."

The question I have for my school though is...what is our philosophy on it? If it's forbidden to be used, I certainly can't create an assignment where I tell them to create a ChatGBT account and here's how to use it, etc.

I think forbidding ChatGPT is shortsighted of schools.  Remember when devices were forbidden? Now they are accepted as a pencil in the school building.  I love your example of the resume, "it created a nice starting point".  Many times students are stuck trying to get started on a writing assignment and ChatGPT can provide them with ideas, jumping-off points, etc. Students will still need to write the essay, citations, etc.. but they can spend their time doing those things instead of being stuck trying to come up with an idea.  I think it is also useful for teaching complex ideas.  My daughter works in a Biological Laboratory at MIT, and many people there use it for all sorts of things, including creating presentations, research, and fixing coding errors.  I think the list is endless.  When we put barriers to new technology, k-12 students are the losers, higher education will expect students to have these skills.

Eduweek.org has done many articles on how to use ChatGpt  in k-12.
